Below are the posters of the student group projects funded by Semel HCI in the 2019-2020 academic year.

Due to the unforeseen circumstances, many groups were not able to put on their intended events. We are proud to see how different organizations pivoted their events and moved them to an online format, demonstrating flexibility and resilience during these times.

Active Minds UCLA 2020 Mental Health Conference: Empowering Minds Through Education, Storytelling, and Short Films
Active Minds holds a conference every year that focuses on educating the UCLA community and the surrounding Los Angeles population on the importance of mental health. This year’s conference displayed student-made films about mental health.
The Veteran’s Garden: Food from the Garden to the Table by Jazmyn M. Yap
As Lead Student Gardener at the Veterans’ Garden, Jazmyn worked closely with the Student Veterans of America (SVA) at UCLA and Dr. Emily at the UCLA Veteran Resource Center (VRC). She coordinated food production, distribution, and volunteer participation at the Veterans’ Garden.
UCLA Zero Waste Campaign by Emily Davis and Shawn Fujioka
The UCLA Zero Waste Campaign, a campaign under the umbrella of the Ecology, Economy, and Equity (E3) organization, is a student-led initiative working to educate students on sustainable and affordable waste practices.
Food Science at UCLA by Hanna Barlow
Food science studies the physical, biological, and chemical makeup of food. This study explores student interest in a food science major and current opportunities at UCLA in this field.
Structural Vulnerabilities Symposium: Understanding Pre and Post Patterns by Cameron Brandt, Melodyanne Cheng, MSc, Rintu Saju
The Health Care Symposium is an annual conference organized by students at the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine, School of Nursing, and the Fielding School of Public Health that explores a topic of importance to modern healthcare. The 24th Annual Health Care Symposium discussed Structural Vulnerabilities in Health: Medical and Public Health Solutions with experts from various health fields.
Uncomfortable Truths about Comfort Eating: The Link Between Food Insecurity and Stress Eating by Kiran Cherian, Lauren Tiongcho-Hofschneider, M.A., and A. Janet Tomiyama, Ph.D.
This study explores the effects of food insecurity on comfort eating and finds that the eating habits of food insecure individuals reflects low socioeconomic stressors.
Medicine and Art at UCLA
Medicine and Art at UCLA helps cultivate a space for students in STEM to explore the intersection between creativity and interdisciplinary skills fostered in health care. They conduct various art activities in the service of hospital patients.
E3: Ecology, Economy, Equity: Free Produce and Basic Needs Fair
Earth Month is a campaign under E3: Ecology, Economy, and Equity that honors the founding of Earth Day with events throughout April. E3’s Free Produce and Basic Needs Fair provides resources for the UCLA community and promotes healthier lifestyles.
South Campus Block Party by the Built Environment and Public Health Council
The Built Environment and Public Health Council (BEPHC) works at the intersection of the built environment and public health to highlight opportunities for the UCLA community to engage on a variety of important issues. They hosted a South Campus Block Party to evaluate its effects on stress reduction and community building.
QWER Hacks 2020 by Sharvani Jha and Isabel Ketner
The Society of Women Engineers at UCLA participated in QWER Hacks which was created for students to have an opportunity to create innovative products meant to serve underrepresented groups such as the LGBTQ+ community. The products emphasize mental and physical health.
Just Breathe: Impact of Combined Controlled-Breathing and Emotion Regulation Training on Undergraduate and Medical Students Well Being by Preksha Patel, Matthew Abikenari, Dara G. Ghahremani, PhD
The Integrated Medicine Student Interest Group conducted their own community-based version of the SKY Campus Happiness program, which combines training in controlled breathing techniques and emotion regulation strategies. They held a SKY meditation retreat to see its effect on sleep quality and anxiety.
Promoting Student Health and Wellness: IDEA Hacks by Saman Hashemipour, Michelle Lam, and Michelle Tran
IDEA Hacks is California’s largest hardware-focused hackathon where hackers can make innovative products over a 36-hour period. This year, the group decided to substitute the event’s sugar-filled snacks with more healthy options to promote the well-being of its participants.
Assessing Changes in Knowledge and Attitudes Among Participants of a Forensic Medical Evaluation Training by Mehar Maju, Victoria Lee, Leslie Ojeaburu, Fangning Gu, Sophia Taleghani, Simon Levinson, Regina Husman, Sural Shah MD, Adam Richards MD, PhD, MPH
The UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine conducted a study to evaluate the effectiveness of a forensic medical evaluation (FME). FME was first introduced to local clinicians by the LA Human Rights Initiative (LAHRI) in 2019.
Creating Space: A Multifaceted Project to Improve Lactation Support at UCLA by Sydney Spencer and Varduhi Niksalyan
Creating Space is a graduate student-led project that is committed to increasing support for UCLA breastfeeding students and staff. This group, along with the Bruin Lactation Coalition, authored a White Paper that outlined six recommendations to improve lactation resources at UCLA.
